PROJECT BRIEF

Provide UX expertise and design a conceptual prototype for their new business-to-business (B2B) marketplace portal that would serve as a proof-of-concept to demonstrate the value of UX design. Coach the recently established in-house digital design team on user experience best practices and methodologies.

INFORMATION GATHERING

We spent a week doing a deep-dive with the client team to familiarize ourselves with the company and team culture, their processes and products, and their goals and roadblocks. It was a whirlwind week that provided great insight and cemented new working relationships.

Stakeholder interviews

To better empathize with and understand the stakeholders’ perspectives, was wanted to get to know them. We conducted interviews that gave us insights into what they care about, what they were hoping to achieve, what they felt their role was for the project and how they could best contribute, and what concerns they had. We discussed their existing portals, their needs for the B2B portal, and how we could help them achieve their goals.

User Story Workshop

We facilitated a 4-hour workshop to demonstrate the process of creating user stories and a backlog. The client team was very engaged and eager to apply the methodology to their design process.

PROTOTYPING

The client team was eager to learn UX processes and best practices. I explained design rationale and established review processes to facilitate actionable feedback and consistent delivery.

I designed a clickable prototype proof-of-concept focused on the purchase flow (browse to purchase) that worked within the constraints of the client’s existing design system and navigational structure.

RESULTS

This engagement required me to adapt quickly to new client cultures and business needs and to quickly grasp detailed information and complex concepts about an unfamiliar industry.

The UX coaching and insights from this project proved invaluable to the client and the proof-of-concept prototype I created was well received by leadership. In fact, leadership was so convinced of the value and efficacy of the process that they funded a follow-on engagement to fully develop the marketplace.
